In any manufacturing operation, having the right tools for each job is essential. Cutting Tools are an integral part of the machining industry. These tools have been around for centuries and are becoming more important over time. Most of the processes associated with the mechanical industry such as drilling, cutting, profiling, welding, and milling require equipment we call cutting tools.
Being an integral part of the machining business, you must realize the importance of highly precise tools. There are various types of cutting tools available. Let's understand what cutting tools are.
What Are Cutting Tools?
Cutting tools are sharp-edged tools that are used to remove excess layers of material from the workpiece by various mechanisms in order to obtain the desired shape and size. Some of the cutting mechanisms are reaming, drilling, milling, slotting, tapping, threading, boring and so on.
What are the types of cutting tools?
Indexable Milling
This tool consists of 2 important parts, namely the holder and several cutting chisels called inserts which are attached to the holder and can be replaced when they are worn out. There are various indexable milling such as shoulder milling, slotting milling, copy milling and face milling cutter.
Solid End Milling
This type of cutting tool is used to make shapes and holes in the workpiece during milling operations and is made of solid materials such as carbide and high speed steel (HSS).
Holemaking
A tool used to make holes with a cylindrical cutter with sharp teeth in a collet and placed on a spindle that rotates at high speed.
Turning Cutting Tools
Turning is a metal forming process in which the workpiece is rotated and the Cutting Tool cuts the surface of the material when the tool moves to the left at a certain speed. This movement of the tool produces a chip, which moves up the surface of the tool. Turning produces workpieces that are straight, conical, curved, or grooved, such as the shape of shafts, spindles, and pins.
Tapping
A threaded type of cutting tool that produces chips with multiple cutting teeth. A Tap will enter the workpiece axially and cut the inner thread into a hole. Thread / Thread can be cut / shaped to a certain depth or penetrate the hole that has been prepared.
What Material Are Cutting Tools Made Of?
- High Speed Steel (HSS)
- Cemented Carbide and Cermet
- Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD)
- Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN)
